Residence for a dentist couple at Vita

The client is a dentist couple, Dr. Tamboli from Vita. The plot size is 4000 sq.ft. with the requirements of the client having three bedrooms, living, kitchen and dining spaces. The client is being recommended to the firm by one of the firm’s old clients.

Plot shape is oblique having roads at north and west directions. The client showed concern over the irregular oblique shape of the plot but was convinced by the principal architect that due to the oblique shape it would enable in creating inclined lines that would go with the geometry of the plot adding to the formation of creative spaces internally and externally in the plan.

A wall parallel to the inclined side of the plot marks one side of a courtyard in the bungalow thus creating an interesting space of the courtyard due to irregular geometry. The courtyard has double height with CNC cutting jaali work on the west facing wall to create interesting play of shadows during the daytime and creating golden illumination of light during sunset. The external side of the inclined wall forms a niche for a double car parking space complementing the plot boundaries.

The pattern of the CNC cutting of the jaali is continued on the plain glass roof of the courtyard penetrating skylight through it. The home upon entering, opens up to a mesmerizing view of the living and dining area held together by the courtyard, with gardens on the external north and east side of the living room. This leaves the user stunned for a moment to absorb the beauty of the gardens, the courtyard and the interesting pattern of the jaali and its shadows.
